For those who love exploring San Francisco on foot or by bike, especially its many open green spaces, the Crosstown Trail[1] is a must. Dedicated in 2019, it traverses the City from the southeast corner (Candlestick Point[2]) to the northwest corner (Lands End[3]). While San Francisco itself is only seven miles long by seven miles wide, the trail is 17 miles.
The Crosstown Trail was spearheaded by a small group of volunteers led by Bob and Pat Siegel and Karen Rhodes. They first thought of the idea in 2012, the trail was officially recognized by the City in 2014, and it was dedicated five years later on National Trails Day. What makes this trail unique is that the path uses mostly existing routes through public parks, shopping corridors, tiled staircases and community gardens. It enhances the San Francisco experience, whether you are a visitor or a resident.
